Vision boards: A guide to intentionally craft your own in 2024

Over the past few years, my annual ritual of crafting a vision board has evolved into an anticipated, reflective practice. As one year concludes and another unfolds, I find joy and inspiration in this mindful exercise.

Since this is such an enriching experience for me and my process, I thought I’d share with you what a vision board is, how to create one for yourself, and how it can impact how you navigate your life.

I find them helpful for expressing my true desires in a creative way, navigating the terrain of my heart (not just my head), and thoughtfully setting my intentions for each new year.

Let’s explore what they’re all about, so you can decide if it’s something you’d like to try yourself.

What is a Vision Board?

A vision board (or dream board) is a curated visual display that reflects your aspirations. It's more than just a collage; it's a visual testament to the idea that what we consistently focus on, we bring into our lives.

As I mentioned, I find that engaging in a creative exercise like this one allows us to express what we really want in new and surprising ways.

We’re engaging in a right-brain activity, an opportunity to access more intuition and imagination of what’s possible—and I personally love that. I believe that when we sit down to design what we wish to create intentionally, we lift up our goals with positive and loving energy.

To sum up, vision boards are a wonderful way to imagine the possibilities of what you can accomplish. They operate as a visually helpful guide towards a more authentic and fulfilling path ahead.

How Do I Get Started?

Before you begin, here are some suggestions to help you tune into your desires. These steps can assist you in creating your vision board with purpose and getting the most out of this visualization exercise.

Grounding Meditation:

Basically, a grounding meditation is a way to let the day go, tap into yourself, and elevate your visioning experience.

Whether it's a brief breathing exercise or an immersive guided meditation, this practice can serve as a bridge from the mind to the heart.

Journaling:

Reflect on each category or dimension of your life you want to add to your board (more details on this below). Start with what your achievements were in the previous year and what you’d like to achieve next.

If you’re feeling stuck, check out YearCompass for structured journaling prompts to see existing patterns and begin envisioning what’s next more easily.

Now that you're centered, let the creative process begin.

What Categories Should I Include?

I enjoy taking a comprehensive approach when reflecting on my ideal future. This can be done by breaking down aspirations into tangible categories.

If you’re creating a vision board for your personal life or business goals, I enjoy using SAMSHA’s Eight Dimensions of Wellness as a category starting place.

Here’s what those dimensions are:

  • Physical Wellness: Body, Movement, Health

  • Mental Wellness: Mindset, Stress, Resilience

  • Emotional Wellness: Emotions, Feelings, Energy

  • Spiritual Wellness: Sense of Meaning Through Nature, Beliefs, Purpose, or Practices

  • Occupational Wellness: Job Satisfaction, Professional Development, Transitions

  • Social Wellness: Family, Friendship, Support Network

  • Financial Wellness: Stability, Money Mindset

  • Environmental Wellness: Inspiring Spaces, Ecological Responsibility

Are any other categories coming forward for you? Consider whether there's something new you want to learn or focus on that deserves its own category.

Don't let anything hold you back—mix it up with big and small goals that deeply resonate with who you want to be and what you want to do in your life. Whether it's getting better at something, trying out a new idea, or aiming for goals in different parts of your life, it's all up to you.

While I’ve outlined a few practical considerations, once you get going, I recommend allowing your intuition to guide you without overthinking things.

Simply embrace the flow of creativity as you build your board.

How Do I Create a Vision Board?

Alright, let's jump into the exciting part – getting started crafting your vision board. We've laid the groundwork with meditation and journaling, and now it's time to bring that vision to life.

In this section, we'll explore the nitty-gritty of creating your board, from digital to handcrafted options and sourcing images to the layout.

Digital vs. Handcrafted

The choice between digital and handcrafted methods is deeply personal:

  • Handcrafted Route: Consider poster boards or dedicated journals for a tactile experience.

  • Digital Route: Explore apps like Freeform, Milanote, Canva, or leverage platforms like PowerPoint or Google Slides for a digital creation.

Sourcing Photos

Curate your vision with images from free resources like Pexels, Unsplash, Pixabay, or snippets from magazines and newspapers.

Visual Layout

Decide whether a categorized approach or a holistic assembly suits your vision. Incorporate annotations, goals, reminders, quotes, and keywords that resonate with your journey, if you so choose.

Reflect on Your Vision Board

Regularly revisit your vision board. Reflect on emerging themes, patterns, and areas that may be overlooked. Engage in discussions with others to strengthen your commitment to manifesting your desires.

Where to Put Your Vision Board

Consider placing your handcrafted board in a strategic, visible location—your bedroom, office, heck, why not your bathroom? If digital, integrate it into your daily life as wallpaper on your devices for regular accessibility.

As you immerse yourself in the creative process of shaping your vision, think beyond it being a static, visual representation—let it be a living document of your inner and outer desires, something you can add to and subtract from, steering your course on your journey.

Final Thoughts

Drawing from Peter Block's wisdom, he eloquently reminds us that “one’s vision is not a roadmap but a compass.” This insight underscores the idea that a vision board isn't a strict plan but rather a guiding light, supporting us toward achieving our big dreams.

Personally, I liken the process of centering myself and setting intentions through a vision board to paging through my journal – it's a means of reviewing my progress throughout the year and reflecting on my achievements as I transition into the next phase.

Moreover, crafting a vision board doesn't have to be a one-time activity. Feel empowered to infuse it with personal touches and incorporate new elements as they arise.

For added accountability, consider creating your vision board collaboratively with a friend or partner. This can transform into a delightful shared experience where you explore how your goals align, and sharing your intentions with someone can serve as a supportive mechanism to stay focused and motivated.

So give it a try!

Let it be your vision board, your guiding compass, charting a course toward a life filled with purpose and fulfillment. If you’re seeking support in clarifying your vision, a holistic coach like myself is here to help.
