Signs you’re heading towards a career change (and how to navigate it)

Have you ever experienced the draining sensation of pushing through each day, only to find yourself stuck in a cycle of burnout? As someone who once faced corporate burnout but emerged as a holistic coach, I understand this struggle intimately.

For years, I grappled with the weight of exhaustion before realizing that a significant misalignment existed between my values and my profession. It took a deep examination of my job's impact on my well-being to uncover the root cause of my burnout.

Reflecting on this period, I now see how I gradually distanced myself from my authentic self in pursuit of societal definitions of success—chasing titles, salaries, and status symbols. Yet, the more I strayed from my true essence, the more disconnected I felt.

Devoting 40 or more hours weekly to a job that clashed with my core beliefs led to overwhelming stress and dissatisfaction. However, through introspection, self-discovery, and nurturing my well-being, I managed to realign my work with my values, ushering in newfound joy and fulfillment.

Drawing from my personal journey with burnout, I've compiled a list of indicators that suggest you might be veering off course in your career and a recommendation on steps to find your aligned path.

10 Indications of Career Misalignment

1. Tune into Your Body's Signals

Looking back, I recognize the signals my body, mind, and spirit were sending—persistent fatigue, stress, and unhappiness. Ignoring these cues only prolonged my struggle. Recognize that perpetual exhaustion and dissatisfaction signify a need for change.

2. Overcoming the "Sunday Scaries"

If the thought of returning to work after the weekend fills you with dread, it's time to listen to your instincts. Your career should evoke excitement and fulfillment, not dread and apprehension.

3. Embracing a Brighter Future

Feeling incapable of enduring your current job until retirement is a clear indication that change is necessary. Life is too precious to spend in perpetual misery.

4. Rediscovering Enjoyment in Work

When tasks that once brought joy become burdensome, it's a sign of discord. While not every aspect of work may be enjoyable, persistent dissatisfaction warrants reevaluation.

5. Wired and Tired Sensations

Constantly feeling both wired and tired suggests an imbalance in your routine and potential misalignment with where you spend your time. Prioritize rest and self-care to restore equilibrium and address work-life balance issues.

6. Seeking Relief from Routine

Counting down the days until your next vacation is a symptom of discontentment. While breaks are rejuvenating, an unending cycle of dissatisfaction necessitates change.

7. Reconnecting with Basic Needs

Neglecting fundamental needs like nutrition and social connection indicates a deeper issue. Feeling disconnected from oneself underscores the importance of realignment.

8. Authenticity in the Workplace

Feeling compelled to hide aspects of yourself at work signals a lack of alignment. Work should be a space for self-expression and utilizing your unique talents.

9. Aligning with Personal Values

Incompatibility between your values and workplace culture is disheartening. Seek environments where you can authentically express yourself and contribute in line with your principles.

10. Identity and Career Alignment

Understanding your core identity is essential for aligning with your career path. Clarity about your values and aspirations facilitates informed decisions about your professional journey.

Discovering Your Path to Career Alignment

Recognizing the signs of career misalignment is the initial step toward reclaiming fulfillment. My experience taught me that burnout stems from deeper issues, often related to values and self-awareness. By acknowledging these signs and taking proactive measures, you can pave the way for a more fulfilling professional life.

For myself, the “golden handcuffs” (a.k.a. the huge survival fear that making a career change will make you destitute) was a factor that held me up for a long time. But it doesn’t need to be that way. I reflected on why I didn’t want to stay at a job just for the money and perhaps you’ll find my process helpful.

Remember, it's never too late to realign your career with your authentic self. Trust your intuition, heed the signals from your mind and body, and embrace the necessary changes to live a life that resonates with who you truly are.

Start by prioritizing your well-being today to create space for reconnecting with your true self. If you're navigating burnout and career dissatisfaction, consider seeking support from a coach to guide you through this transformative journey.

As someone who greatly benefited from life coaching, I now empower others to break free from burnout and rediscover fulfillment in both work and life. If you're ready to embark on this journey of self-discovery and transformation, reach out and explore how coaching could support you.
