On a dreary fall afternoon, I found myself facing a particularly frustrating day. The demands of life had heightened my nervous system, leaving me longing for some much-needed relief.

I turn to yin yoga during such moments and when I feel signs of burnout. It’s a practice that has consistently guided me toward tranquillity and release. In this post, you'll find out what yin yoga is, what it can teach us, and how to make it a part of your daily routine.

Unveiling yin yoga: A practice of surrender

Yin yoga is unlike the fast-paced, high-energy activities that often characterize our daily lives. It speaks directly to individuals like us, who have ventured through high-pressure and anxiety-filled days.

In the realm of yin yoga, you'll find no hurried motions or demanding poses. Instead, it encourages us to embrace passive, extended postures, typically sustained for two to five minutes or even longer.

Here, surrendering to the stretch is key, allowing gravity to take the lead while setting aside the need for muscular effort. The practice champions stillness, patience, and the profound art of surrendering to the present moment. Learn more about yin’s benefits.

The beauty of "letting go" and "letting be"

My life, like many others, has often revolved around "pushing through" the day’s trials and tribulations. This inherent drive has propelled me forward in various aspects of life, yet it has also introduced lots of stress and tension.

Yin yoga has given me the profound wisdom of "letting go" and "letting be." It teaches that not every challenge demands forceful effort and that sometimes, healing and transformation come through embracing the present moment with grace.

Something much easier said than done, of course. Especially when you’re holding a deep hip release ;)

Creating a daily yin yoga practice (even starting from home)

You don't need to be a seasoned yogi to experience the transformative power of yin yoga. Nor do you need to spend money, go to a fancy studio, or be particularly bendy.

You can easily start incorporating more yin into your day from the comfort of your own home. There are tons of yin yoga videos available on YouTube. For individuals pressed for time, you’ll easily find all sorts of different durations. For anyone seeking a more accessible entry point, adding “beginner” in your search query will take you to more gentle practice.

YouTube channels

To kickstart your yin yoga voyage, here are a few of my favourite YouTubers:

  • Yoga with Kassandra Great balance of philosophy, exercise, and no-nonsense guided yoga.

  • The Bare Female Taps into the spiritual and emotional dimensions well if you’re looking for more than a stretch.

  • Yoga With Adriene One of the most popular yoga YouTubers. It's a classic one but lovely nonethless.

Books & Guides

Here are some other guides I found that look like a helpful starting point.

And leaving with a tip to create your routine: James Clear's insights from "Atomic Habits" underscore the value of starting small. Select a video that focuses on a single stretch or lasts just a few minutes. Or try a different resource that helps you get started.

Simply having a low threshold to get started will mean you’re more likely to actually do it (and you might even surprise yourself that you can continue longer than you thought once you’ve gotten started).

Ultimately, you'll then be more likely to weave yin into your daily routine and establish a lasting habit of self-care and mindfulness. Try it out.

Embark on your journey with yin yoga

As you embark on your yin yoga journey, I invite you to create a personal mantra that resonates with your unique path and aspirations for transformation. For me, it's as simple as incorporating different messages that are meaningful in the moment. Sometimes, it’s about letting go, surrendering, presence, accepting today, or simply releasing.

What feels meaningful for you?

I encourage you to cultivate a sustainable yin routine. It’s a practice that offers so many lessons — about yourself, the world, and the moment. Start small, embrace your unique path, and remember, it's all about surrendering to the present amidst the hustle and bustle of life.
